Teen Vogue: Factsheet Part 2

Read Media Factsheet #205 Teen Vogue Part 2 - Application of theory. You can find the Factsheet in our Factsheet archive on the Media Shared drive in school or download it here using your Greenford Google login. Answer the following questions:

1) How does the Factsheet apply David Gauntlett's ideas about gender and identity to Teen Vogue?
David Gauntlett's believes the idea of gender has become more fluid and changeable.
TeenVogue’s editorial teams will try to offer content that reflects the complex range of ideas that feed into modern teen identity.

2) David Gauntlett has also written about the importance of role models. How can this be applied to the Teen Vogue CSP?
TeenVogue can be seen to have moved on
from the representation of females as passive and dependent
on men as representations in TeenVogue are largely focused on
active and dynamic role models.

3) bell hooks suggests that profit-seeking media industries reinforce patriarchal values and power structures. How can these ideas be applied to Teen Vogue? Try and argue both sides - that Teen Vogue both empowers women but also arguably reinforces some hegemonic gender stereotypes.
Teen vogue is from a huge media conglomerate, Vogue and creates a large amount of profit through adverts. This supports capitalism however the articles in Teen Vogue are quite liberal and left wing so both are contradicting.

4) List the key points on van Zoonen's gender theories in the Factsheet. How can we apply some of these ideas to Teen Vogue?
Women are often shown to be passive.  Teen vogue usually challenges this and women in the article are usually the main subject and all the attention is on them.
Men tend to be valued for their accomplishments. Teen vogue often focus on women accomplishment more.
Women tend to be valued for their looks and apparent
sexual availability.- Although teenvogue does have a category on beauty and women are applauded for their beauty and look, Tenn vogue makes sure women are also valued for what they have accomplished.

5) Read the Greta Thunberg case study on pages 3-4. How does the Factsheet use media theories in the analysis of the special 2019 print edition of Teen Vogue?
Gauntlett- Greta is usually represented as a role model, show to be a dynamic female who travels to climate protests, meets with world leaders and writes speeches offering inspiration to others.
Propps- She is presented as a hero. Shown in the pictures where the background is blurred so the focal point is towards her and she is valued for her accomplishments.
Blumers and Katz- Adueince likely to idienty with her since she is a young 'normal' teenager who has achieved successful things in her life
